In San Miguel de Allende, you can find a museum dedicated to traditional handmade toys from Mexico’s past. In Museo La Esquina, you can find toys from every region in Mexico. The museum is located on a corner, hence the name, near the main plaza. At first glance, it seems to be located in a small and modest building, but once inside, you find a veritable treasure trove of toys.
As you make your way through the rooms, each dedicated to a different style of toy and play, Mexican nursery rhymes pump through the speakers. You are transported to a more innocent time, as you gaze at the glass cases filled with bright and whimsical pieces. Visitors have a twinkle in their eyes as they see their favorite toys displayed with such love and care. I saw countless adults pressing their faces to the glass, or lovingly pointing details out to their children. It felt as if the rooms transported each guest to their very own childhood memory. I could almost see their inner child leading them from room to room.
Every room holds more and more wonders. From humble rag dolls to intricate wood and porcelain dolls, to papier mache creations, all displayed as if they are the most important historical artifacts.
